DuPont Hike 21June09

Well, though it was a hot day, we had a great time on our waterfall hike this past Saturday outside Brevard. The parking area was extremely crowded, but we were early enough to find a spot and begin our hike. After seeing Hooker Falls, we made our way to Triple Falls where we found a spot on the rocks between the bottom two tiers of the falls to lunch. We continued our hike to the impressive High Falls then made our way to the covered bridge at the top where we took a short break and watched the fish, lizards, and snakes(!).

After hiking down, though not always on the trail (hope the arm heals quickly Karen!), we found the parking area even more crowded, and cars lined up on both sides of the road in both directions. So, we vacated our spot and headed into Brevard to find a place to eat (of course). We had a good meal at the Pisgah Fish Camp then headed into the Pisgah National Forest

After a brief look at Looking Glass Falls, we headed on up to the top of the ridge and got on the Blue Ridge Parkway and headed back. We made a few stops to see the views and flowers, and on one of these stops had a remarkable find. Along one of the seeps we were shown a patch of Sundew, a small, rare, carniverous plant (that means that it traps and eats bugs!). See a picture here.

Hope you can join us next month as we beat the heat by heading up to Andrews Bald. Note that the date changed as Dick's daughter is getting married on the 11th.
