Historical Cataloochee
03-22-08
Just thought I would let you know about the Historical Cataloochee trip Saturday.
The weather was great and the program was excellent.
We started out at the Methodist Chapel were we were met by a park
worker in period costume having women sit on one side and men on the other
side. A young girl was singing as we walked in, and later after a
history of the church in community life, she led the congregation (about 50
persons in attendance) in singing "Amazing Grace".
Then we moved on to the old school, where a teacher and two students
(again in period costume) were waiting. The teacher explained about the
school and a typical day. We were blessed to have an 85 year old man
in attendance, who went to that very school for seven years, and he had
some unique and very interesting stories to share.
We then made a side trip to an old cemetery.
We finished the walk at the Caldwell House where we were greeted by old
time mountain music, as two ladies came out of the porch and played
fiddles accompanied by the park ranger on guitar.
We even saw one elk laying under a tree as we entered the cove.
SEE WHAT YOU MISSED! - Dick
What a Great March Hike!
030808
So, Whiteside Mtn Hike was last Saturday March 8th. If you missed this hike you missed a good one. Ask anyone who got to go with us. If was an absolutely beautiful day. Clear blue sky and sunshine galore. We started our hike at 1:15pm and started up the steps from the parking lot to the split to start the trail. We chose to go to the left up the slow incline road bed.
We were immediately 20 yards up the trail treated to a wall of frozen icicles taller than all of us and some as big around as your arm. We stopped here and got a group photo. Eleven plus one very excited dog. Eleven was the most we had ever had on a single hike. As we progressed the group broke up into smaller groups progressing at different speeds. There was fresh powdered snow on the road and a few ice or water crossing too. We saw a lot more ice cascades and views into the valley on our approach to the top.
At the top the views were spectacular and long range. We saw lakes way off in the distance and could see the cut of the blue ridge parkway far off in the distance. Unfortunately there were not plaques telling you about the different peaks. We rested, took lots of photos and then continued on up the trail along the ridge top where the next overlook with cable fencing is where the wind found willing birds of prey playing in the updrafts from the valley below.
The loop trail back down the mountain provided more views from exposed rock ledges and more ice cascades. On the north side the return trail was icy and muddy in spots. The final frozen waterfall was awesome. The trail actually took you over the cascade on a wood and metal staircase. The remaining trail was all downhill switchback and we met a few people coming up. We had definitely took the easier route to the top.
On our way down we came upon some fellow hikers who had one of their group fall on an icy step and hit her head on the frozen bank of ice. Our group helped attend to the injured woman with first aid and helped her down the trail to the bottom. Thanks to Doug, "you got skills" and to Silas for running down the steepest part of the trail and back up with the First Aid Kit from Dick's car.
After the hike we went into Cashiers and ate at the great BBQ place. Then for an extra treat we drove a short distance South on 107 toward Wahalla, SC to see Silver Run Falls. A great cap off to a wonderful day out in God's wonderful handiwork we call home.

Great Nature Walks
10/27/07
If you have not been unable to join Dick Sellers on the many Nature walks that he has led over the last couple of months you have been missing out. I was able to make the last 2 in October to Alum Cave Bluffs in the GSM and Tenant Mtn in Pisgah's Shining Rock Wilderness. We had a great group 6 and 7 people. What a priviledge to go out and experience the beauty of God's Creation have fun and fellowship. Keep checking back for upcoming events and another nature walk in December to be announced.

First Event Success
17Oct06
What a resounding success for our first event. We had 28 people in attendance, including 3 children and 3 young adults. Everyone I spoke with seemed excited about future events and reaffirmed the vast need for a group such as this one.
I am so excited to be a part of the ground floor of this new ministry and proud to be associated with such a wonderful group of people. Sometimes Missions means serving those in your backyard and I think we have found a niche that seems unmet in our area.
